Just like the foundation of a building cannot be seen, none of us would question the benefits of having it there. It serves a vital function. You should consider an underlay for your rug to be of the same vital importance. A good underlay can extend the life of a rug and by some estimates, as much as 40%. Most rugs do not wear out, they “ugly out”. The speed of ugly can be determined, to a degree, by the quality of the underlay. Underlay can also reduce the amount of noise transmitted through a floor surface. It also has a thermal benefit by adding an extra layer of warmth to your floor.
And last but not least, it can make your rug feel softer and cozy.
At HEIRLOOM we spent a lot of time looking for the perfect underlay. We found one that we liked so much, we use for all of our personal rugs. It is called Rug Stop. This unique product has a felt material on one side, with a texture that actually “grips” the rug and holds it in place. On the other side, there is a thin layer of a rubber like material that holds onto the hard floor. Hence the name “Rug Stop”. Rug Stop gives your rugs a softer touch when walking on them and will help to prevent damage to your rugs foundation. A rug that moves is prone to be damaged by wrinkles that sit higher and get more walking traffic. It can also be a tripping hazard.
This underlay does not affect your hard flooring. Things like sunlight and other light sources can affect the way your hard floor looks. Also, hardwood floor finish that has not completely cured can discolour when a rug is put on top of it too soon. *Hardwood floors that are finished on site and in the home, should have at least a week to 10 days cure time for a water based finish and 3 to 4 weeks for a solvent based finish. Talk to your flooring installer or finisher to see what the finish product manufacturer recommends.
One other product that we like is a product called Teebaud®. This is a unique product that is often imitated but never matched. It is made up of a thin felt like layer with a water based adhesive on both sides. If you have a thin rug that likes to “walk” or perhaps you have a rug that you want to lay on top of broadloom carpet, then this is the underlay for you. Once in place, your rug will not move unless you move it. And if you decide that you want to move it, simply pull the rug up and put it somewhere else. If there is any adhesive residue, simply wipe the affected area with a damp cloth and the residue will come right off.
Every rug should have an underlay. Some rug sellers will offer a “free underlay”. Please remember that there is no such thing as a free underlay. There are cheap underlays, but you always get what you pay for. Most of those “waffle” grid style underlays will break down and start wearing quickly. Once you have tried a good quality underlay, the others just seem like a waste of time and money.
